Are Solar Panels Worth it in Kelowna?
Absolutely! Kelowna is one of the sunniest cities in Canada, making it an ideal location for solar panels. With an annual average of 304 sunny days and 1949 hours of sunlight, Kelowna ranks in the top 10 sunniest places in the country. With so much sunlight, you can generate significant amounts of solar energy and lower your electricity bills. Installing solar panels in Kelowna helps the environment too, making it a smart, sustainable, and financially savvy choice.
Top 5 Reasons You Should Choose Solar Power in Kelowna
Energy Savings: Kelowna is one of the sunniest places in Canada and solar panels can significantly reduce your electricity bills. During peak solar energy months, your electricity provider might end up owing you!
Environmental Benefits: Switching to solar is a powerful way to reduce your carbon footprint. By harnessing the solar potential of your roof, you help fight climate change and reduce reliance on large-scale energy projects with large environmental footprints and negative impacts. It's an investment that benefits both you and the planet.
Government Incentives: You can get up to $40,000 on a 10-year interest-free Greener Homes Loan from the Government of Canada. As of 2024, the Government of British Columbia is offering incentives of up to $5000 for solar panel installations, and an additional $5000 for battery storage systems. Check BC Hydro for the latest Provincial incentives.
Energy Independence: Generating solar power reduces your reliance on utility companies and volatile electricity prices. With solar, you can offset 100% of your home's energy needs—and with the rise of electric vehicles, you can take another step toward a carbon-free lifestyle.
Increased Property Value: Homes in Kelowna with solar panels have higher resale values, making it a wise investment for homeowners looking to boost property values.

Kelowna is a different program from Alberta, not just a different city
Most of our work is in Alberta, where solar runs under the provincial micro-generation rules. In Kelowna you are on BC Hydro net metering instead, and the differences matter when you compare quotes:
The interconnection application goes to BC Hydro, and your generation credits are reconciled on an annual cycle rather than settled the way an Alberta micro-generation account is.
Electrical permits and inspections in BC run through Technical Safety BC, with some municipalities handling their own inspections, and building or structural review goes through the City of Kelowna.
Okanagan sun is strong and summers are hot, so panel temperature and shading from mature trees drive the design more than snow load does.
Being straight about it: we are an Alberta company with an Okanagan service area, and we have not published a Kelowna install yet. If local volume is what you are shopping for, a Kelowna-based installer may suit you better. If you want the same crew standard we run in Alberta, our own Red Seal electricians rather than subcontractors, call us and we will tell you honestly whether the travel makes sense for your project. See our completed Alberta installs to judge the workmanship.
Frequently Asked Questions about Solar Panels in Kelowna
In this FAQ, we address common questions about solar panels in Kelowna and British Columbia. From understanding the costs and savings potential to exploring financing options and the impact on home values, we aim to provide you with the information you need to make informed decisions about transitioning to solar energy.
-
Most residential systems run between $10,000 and $30,000 before incentives. Kelowna diverges from Alberta in one specific way: BC's permitting and inspection regime is different, and the incentive picture is thinner, so the payback maths leans more on your own consumption than on any program.
-
Less than in Alberta, and it is worth being straight about that. The Clean Energy Improvement Program that finances solar through property taxes is an Alberta municipal program and does not exist in BC. The federal Canada Greener Homes Loan applies. We will tell you what is actually open rather than listing programs you cannot use.
-
Your most recent FortisBC electricity bill showing annual kWh, a photo of your electrical panel, and your address. Kelowna is FortisBC Electric territory throughout: the City sold its own electrical distribution utility to FortisBC in 2013, so interconnection goes through FortisBC's net metering program.
-
Worked back from the kWh on your bill. Kelowna's solar resource is good by BC standards and the Okanagan's dry summers help, but BC's electricity rates are lower than Alberta's, which changes the payback arithmetic rather than the system size.
-
Checked from your panel photo, same as anywhere. Worth flagging separately: FortisBC has been publicly managing electrical capacity constraints in parts of central Kelowna, so on some addresses the service-side answer matters as much as the panel-side one.
-
Milder and greyer than Alberta rather than colder. Kelowna loses less production to snow cover than Edmonton or Red Deer, but winter cloud and valley fog take a bigger bite than Alberta homeowners are used to. Summer is strong.
-
An owned, permitted system with its electrical permit and inspection on file is documentation a buyer's inspector can verify, which is the part that matters. Leased systems complicate a sale.

That is a different chain from Alberta, where the wires owner handles micro-generation directly.
