Are Solar Panels Worth it in Calgary?
You bet! With 333 days of sunshine a year, Calgary is Canada’s sunniest major city. That means with your solar panels, you can generate lots of solar energy in Calgary. And, each kWh you generate reduces your electrical bills and helps to fight climate change.
Top 5 Reasons You Should Choose Solar Installation in Calgary
Energy Savings: Calgary is one of the sunniest places in Canada and solar panels can significantly reduce your electricity bills. During peak solar energy months, your electricity provider might end up owing you!
Environmental Benefits: With solar energy, you decrease your use of electricity generated by burning fossil fuels. This reduces your carbon footprint and contributes to a cleaner environment.
Government Incentives: You can get up to $40,000 on a 10-year interest-free Greener Homes Loan from the Government of Canada. As of 2024, Calgary’s Clean Energy Improvement Program also offers solar financing options. Check Solar Alberta for the latest Federal, Provincial, and Municipal incentives.
Energy Independence: Solar panels reduce your reliance on utility companies and volatile electricity prices.
Increased Property Value: Homes in Calgary with solar panels have higher resale values, making it a wise investment for homeowners looking to boost property values.

What is different about going solar in Calgary
The paperwork is not the same in every Alberta city, because the wires owner is not the same. In Calgary the wires owner is ENMAX Power, so your micro-generation application goes to ENMAX, not to whoever bills you for electricity. The electrical permit is a City of Calgary permit and it is pulled by the contractor doing the work. We pull ours.
ENMAX installs a bi-directional meter after the work passes inspection. Until that meter is in, a finished system cannot export anything to the grid, so ask any installer where that step sits in their timeline.
Calgary gets more hours of sunshine than almost any city in Canada, which is good for production, and more hail than most, which is worth asking about when you compare panel warranties and mounting.
Acreages outside the city limits are a different process again: a different wires owner and county permits rather than City of Calgary ones.
We work across Calgary and the surrounding area, including Airdrie, Chestermere, Cochrane, Okotoks, High River and Strathmore. Our head office is in Nisku, south of Edmonton, and our crews travel. If you would rather use a company with a Calgary address, say so on the call and we will tell you straight whether we are the right fit.
Frequently Asked Questions about Solar Panels in Calgary
In this FAQ, we address common questions about solar panels in Calgary and Alberta. From understanding the costs and savings potential to exploring financing options and the impact on home values, we aim to provide you with the information you need to make informed decisions about transitioning to solar energy.
-
Most residential systems in Calgary run between $10,000 and $30,000 before incentives. Calgary gets more annual sunshine than any other major Canadian city, so a given roof here usually produces more per installed kilowatt than the same roof in Edmonton, which sometimes means a slightly smaller system for the same electricity bill.
-
The City of Calgary runs the Clean Energy Improvement Program, which finances solar through your property tax bill instead of a personal loan. The federal Canada Greener Homes Loan is also open. We confirm what is live the day we quote you, because these programs open and close without much notice.
-
Your most recent electricity bill showing your annual kWh, a photo of your electrical panel, and your address. In Calgary the wires owner is ENMAX Power regardless of which retailer you buy your power from, so the interconnection goes through ENMAX either way.
-
Under Alberta's Micro-generation Regulation the system is sized to meet your own annual consumption, so the answer comes from your bill rather than from your roof area. Calgary's higher irradiance means each panel does slightly more work here than the same panel would further north.
-
Less often than in Edmonton's older core, because much of Calgary's residential stock is newer and already on 100 or 200 amp service, but it still has to be checked. A panel with no spare double-pole space needs work before a solar breaker can go in. Your panel photo answers this before we quote.
-
Better than most people expect, and for a Calgary-specific reason: chinooks. Mid-winter warm spells clear snow off an array more often here than in Edmonton, so Calgary loses fewer full production days to snow cover. The bigger Calgary question is summer hail. Every module we install is certified to IEC 61215, which includes a hail impact test, and we will walk you through how a roof-mounted array sits with your home insurer.
-
An owned, permitted system with its paperwork in order is treated as an improvement. Leased systems, and systems with a lien registered against the title, are the ones that slow a sale down. We install owned systems and hand over the permit and as-built documentation so your realtor has something to show.

“Greenamp service and install process was amazing. Their pricing was the best quote that I received of 8 different providers. Would highly recommend.”
Wayne | GreenAmp Customer
"Fantastic group to work with. Assisted promptly with any and all enquiries from the day you ask for a quote all the way through to post installation. The work they completed was also top notch, the panels look slick and the work area when completed looked like they had not been there."
