These are systems Greenamp designed, permitted and installed on Edmonton homes and commercial buildings, with the equipment recorded as each one was commissioned. They run from a 5 kW starter array up to a 130.5 kW commercial roof carrying 261 modules. Edmonton sits in EPCOR’s distribution territory, so every one of them went through EPCOR’s microgeneration application and an EPCOR meter change. What these Edmonton systems have in common
Most of the Edmonton residential systems here fall between 5 kW and 14.4 kW, which works out to 13 to 32 modules depending on roof area and how much of the roof faces somewhere between east and west. The module on nearly every recent install is the LONGi LR7-54HGBB-450M, a 450-watt panel. The two commercial roofs use Thornova 500-watt and 580-watt modules instead, which keeps the panel count and the racking run manageable on a large array.
Inverters are mostly SolarEdge: a 6 kW unit on the smaller systems and a 7.6 kW Hub on the 10 kW-and-up arrays, both with per-panel optimisers. Where a roof is broken into several small faces, or where a chimney or a neighbouring spruce shades part of it through the winter, we use APsystems DS3-L microinverters instead so one shaded panel does not drag the rest of its string down.

How an Edmonton install actually runs
The photographs tell you what the finished array looks like. They do not tell you what the six weeks before it looked like, so here is the sequence every Edmonton system on this page went through.
Site assessment and design. Roof measurements, pitch and azimuth, rafter spacing, panel condition and the size of the existing electrical service. The service size is what caps the system, not the roof.
EPCOR microgeneration application. Edmonton is EPCOR territory. The application goes in before anything is mounted, and EPCOR confirms the system meets the micro-generation regulation and that the distribution circuit can take it.
City of Edmonton electrical permit. Pulled by us, under our licence, not by the homeowner.
Install. Racking, flashing at every roof penetration, modules, inverter, and the AC run to the panel. A residential system of this size is usually one to two days on the roof.
Inspection and EPCOR meter change. The electrical inspection comes first, then EPCOR swaps the meter for one that measures in both directions. The system does not legally produce until that swap is done.
The part homeowners consistently underestimate is the gap between install day and the meter change. It is an EPCOR queue, not something an installer can accelerate.

Two things set the number: how much unshaded roof faces somewhere between east and west, and the size of the existing electrical service. The service is the harder limit — a 100-amp panel constrains a system well before the roof runs out of room. Commercial roofs are a different conversation entirely; the two on this page are 67.12 kW and 130.5 kW.

It comes down to the roof, not the budget. A clean roof with one or two large faces suits a SolarEdge string inverter with per-panel optimisers — that is what most of the systems on this page use, a 6 kW unit on smaller arrays and a 7.6 kW Hub above about 10 kW. A roof chopped into several small faces, or one where a chimney or a neighbour’s spruce shades part of it through the low winter sun, does better on APsystems DS3-L microinverters, one per panel, so a shaded module does not hold back the rest. The 6.5 kW system on this list is built that way.

The install itself is usually one to two days on the roof for a residential system this size. The calendar time is dominated by two queues we do not control: EPCOR’s microgeneration application, which goes in before anything is mounted, and EPCOR’s meter change after the electrical inspection passes. The system is not legally allowed to produce until that meter swap happens. Plan on several weeks end to end and treat anyone quoting you a same-week turnaround with suspicion.

Ask us and we will try to arrange it. We will not hand out a homeowner’s address without asking them first, so it depends on who in your part of the city is willing — but with sixteen documented Edmonton systems and a lot more that predate this page, there is usually someone in a similar neighbourhood on a similar roof. A drive-by of a finished array tells you more about flashing and racking neatness than any brochure will.

Much the same, which is the point of photographing them. The modules are rated to IEC 61215 for hail and load, the racking is engineered for snow load, and a panel at a normal Edmonton roof pitch sheds snow on its own once the sun gets to it — glass is slicker than shingles. What matters more than the panels is the flashing at every roof penetration, because that is what leaks if it is done carelessly. Look closely at the mounting detail in these photographs; that is the part a homeowner cannot inspect from the ground later.

Yes. Greenamp is based in Nisku, just south of the city, and most of our volume is the Edmonton region — Sherwood Park and Strathcona County, St. Albert, Sturgeon County, Beaumont and Leduc. Those towns are FortisAlberta rather than EPCOR, so the utility paperwork differs even though the install does not. We also work in Calgary, Airdrie, Red Deer and the Okanagan.

A City of Edmonton electrical permit is pulled under our licence before work starts, and an EPCOR microgeneration application goes in for the interconnection — EPCOR confirms the system meets the micro-generation regulation and that the local circuit can accept it. After the install the electrical inspection has to pass, and then EPCOR changes the meter to one that measures in both directions.
